 Abdul Majeed Mohd

He was the former Business Development Manager for the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (Muis). In this position, he was in-charge of the halal certification operations in Singapore. He was instrumental in upgrading the halal certification system in Singapore. Under his charge, halal planning and operations in Singapore saw an increase in halal applications and there was marked productivity boost in the processing of halal certificates. His leadership led to the revamping of halal procedures and systems that were ineffective. His wealth of working experience in strategic planning led and facilitated in the completion of a 5-year strategic plan for Muis’ halal certification department.

He represented MUIS, as a speaker/panelist in conferences on the halal industry. Under his stewardship, Singapore organised Asean’s first “Training of Trainers for Halal Inspectors” in 2001. He was the key trainer in this programme. As a consultant, he has been appointed as the Research Director by a publisher of an international halal trade directory where he contributed 6 of the main articles on halal issues.

His knowledge and management experience in halal certification had benefited clients in more ways than one. As the halal consultant, he has had the trust and privilege of servicing clients from different business sectors: food caterers, franchise type business, hotel, cafeteria/canteen, bakeries, poultry and last but not least, manufacturing. As the in-house consultant for some of these clients, he conducted halal training and installed an in-house halal assurance management system.

The first hotel in Singapore to get halal certification for its kitchen was made possible via his professional services. His ideas on halal assurance management system enabled a franchise business client to save salary costs of some 25 workers. And another client managed to prevent revenue loss from confirmed orders when he successfully got in time, another halal certificate for this client after Muis revoked its existing halal certificate.

Finally, he was the Halal Consultant to the organizers of the ‘Singapore International Halal Showcase (SIHAS) in 2008. He was responsible for strategic planning of the SIHAS event. As such, he was responsible for strategic marketing contents for the SIHAS’s brochure, website, Embassy’s messages and Guest of Honours’ speeches. He was also given the confidence to be the Chairman of the SIHAS Seminar Committee.

He holds a M.Phil (Econs) degree from the University of Wales, United Kingdom. His first degree (Bachelor of Science, B.Sc) was from the National University of Singapore.

Achievements in Halal Consultancy:

- Obtained Muis halal certification within 2.5 months for a franchise client with 46 outlets, one factory and 3 kitchens. Normally, it takes 6 – 9 months upon submission for a franchise business client to get halal certification should the company do on its own.

- Obtained Muis halal certification within 2 months for a hotel which was rejected by Muis after 4 months of applying for the halal certification on its own. Obtained the halal certification within 21 days for a client who had its halal certificate revoked.

- Getting Muis halal certification within 2 months for a client who tried, on his own, for 3 years and failed to get halal certification.
